Did You Know…

The term “cutting a PO” originated from the practice of physically perforating or embossing the control number of a purchase order into the document’s sheet of paper. This was a safeguard in case the ink on the document got smudged and a person had to go back to the files to get the information off of a “clean” document.

Data used to be entered into a computer using cardboard punch cards. Programmers used the rows and columns to represent a unique field of data (example: job titles) with the position of the hole representing a selection made within that field (example: clerk or manager).  Computers “read” the card’s data into the computer by scanning the cards and capturing which row and column intersections had holes punched into it.  Punch card programs were originally developed in the textile industry in the 1700’s to make colorful patterns in cloth weaving looms.
