In this issue

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the interstate highway system. With the passage of the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956, the US undertook what was, at that time, the largest public works project in our history. Today, there are nearly 48,000 miles of interstate highways in the nation. As a young man, President Dwight Eisenhower took part in the Army’s first transcontinental convoy in 1919, which took nearly two months to drive from Washington, D.C. to San Francisco. After his experiences in World War II and his observations of the German Autobahn, Eisenhower became a champion for an interstate highway system.
